Day 2
Hiking and Kayaking Adventure to Quilotoa Lagoon – Explore Ecuador’s Andean Gem
Discover the breathtaking Quilotoa Lagoon, a stunning emerald-green crater lake nestled in the Ecuadorian Andes. Located 66 kilometers south of Latacunga, Quilotoa is the westernmost volcano in Ecuador, formed over 800 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption. Today, this water-filled caldera is one of the most spectacular hiking destinations in Ecuador, offering panoramic views of the Andean highlands and an unforgettable cultural experience.
An Unforgettable Journey to Quilotoa
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we’ll depart from our lodge and take the scenic Pan-American Highway south, embarking on one of the most incredible trips in Ecuador. Our adventure begins with a visit to an authentic indigenous market—either the Saquisilí Market (Thursdays) or the Pujilí Market (Sundays)—where you can experience the rich traditions and craftsmanship of local Andean communities.
From there, we’ll continue towards Quilotoa Lagoon, located at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters (12,467 ft). Along the way, we’ll pass through the breathtaking Zumbahua Canyon, picturesque indigenous villages, and Andean farmlands, offering a glimpse into one of Ecuador’s most authentic and culturally rich regions.
Explore the Beauty of Quilotoa
Upon arrival, you’ll be captivated by the breathtaking turquoise waters of Quilotoa Crater Lake, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and high-altitude landscapes. Our expert guide will share fascinating insights about this volcanic formation and the traditions of the communities living nearby. Depending the weather you will have time to kayaking at the lake
Important Tip: The weather in Quilotoa can be unpredictable, so we recommend bringing warm, waterproof clothing to stay comfortable during your adventure.
Cultural Experience & Local Interaction
Before lunch, we’ll visit a traditional indigenous home, offering a unique opportunity to interact with local Kichwa families and learn about their way of life. This enriching experience provides a deeper understanding of Ecuador’s indigenous heritage and traditions.
